From a notebook entry dated 4-16-87 :

One plans for life but death hovers relentlessly, able to strike us at any moment, as quickly as a bolt of lightning. The routine and monotonous nature of the days of each of our individual lives encourage in us an illusionary belief of the certainty of our existence as it also helps us ignore the fact that all of our lives are lived and based on probabilities. “We probably won’t die today ” , we tell ourselves, while simultaneously holding within ourselves a deep and  sometimes hidden realization that one day we will all cease to exist.
